A Malian soldier and a civilian have been killed in the North West Malian city of Timbuktu by suspected jihadists, military sources say.
The suspected jihadists arrived the city in a vehicle and spent sometime before killing the soldier and his cousin.
Military sources further say they were murdered with an automatic pistol.
A customs colonel, member of an armed pro-government group escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday in Bamako.
Mali fell into the hands of al-qaeda linked jihadists between March and April 2012. The groups have been pushed back following French intervention in 2013.
The Malian and foreign forces are still unable to effectively control some zones despite the signing of a peace deal in 2015.
